Fernando Pessoa is the quintessential writer of Lisbon, his home city. He was born here on 13th June 1888, St. Anthony’s Day, in Largo de São Carlos, Chiado “The Heart of the city”, and died on 30th November 1935 at the Hospital São Luís dos Franceses in Bairro Alto.
All of Pessoa’s major work are set in Lisbon. Through the voices of the assistant bookkeeper Bernando Soares (Book of Disquiet) and Álvaro de Campos (“Lisbon Revisited (1923)” and “Lisbon Revisited (1926)”), Pessoa immortalised Lisbon.
This selected texts is a journey through Lisbon, in the words of Fernando Pessoa, himself and some of his most famous personas: Alberto Caeiro, Álvaro de Campos and Bernardo Soares.
